The latest addition to our Nelsonians Abroad gallery comes from Jacqueline 'Curly' Walker. A former Nayland, Broadgreen and Waimea College student, she made the move to Oakham, near Leicester in England's East Midlands in 2005.

Like many overseas Kiwis, she was deeply affected by the reports and images from February's Christchurch earthquake and decided to do her bit by holding a musical fundraiser in her newly adopted hometown. She sent us some pictures from the event, along with some background information about her life in England:

"We raised £1201.74 (almost $2500) at our fundraising evening. I was pleased as we had never organised anything like it before.

"The couple in the first picture came down from Loughborough for the gig, it is Renata (who has rellies in both Nelson and Christchurch) and her fiance. They loved it when one of the bands (Identity Crisis) played lots of Crowded House. The second pic is Curly and The Boys (you'll notice that Gerry is also a girl but we call her our honourary boy as she joined after the name did). The third pic is us at Wayland Radio in Norfolk playing live, and the last pic is my husband Peter in our garden.

"I moved here to Oakham in January 2005 after I married an Englishman in December 2004. We tied the knot at the Honest Lawyer in Nelson. I had been living in Australia for 17 years, mostly in Perth but I also had a couple of years up at Mount Newman (an iron ore mining town 1150km north of Perth) I went to Tasman Primary, Nayland Primary, Broadgreen and finally Waimea College.

"I miss the weather on your side of the world but I do love living here. Rutland is a very rural county and the live acoustic music scene here is great, there are more music clubs than you can point a stick at.

"My husband Peter and I have a large (by English standards) garden and we grow all our own fruit and most of our own veg, we have chooks and photo voltic solar panels so I guess you could say we're middle-aged, middleclass hippies.

"Everyone here in Oakham was so shocked by what happened in Christchurch and I suppose that's why our event was so well supported, Oakham is a town of approx 12,000, so not huge.

"All of my immediate family and several aunts and uncles are in Nelson and Blenheim and we come back regularly to visit them.

Are you a Nelsonian abroad?

We know lots of our international readers use The Nelson Mail website to keep an eye on their old home town and we'd love to hear from any of you who have settled in far-flung corners of the globe.

Send us your photos of your new home and we'll feature them on this page.

Try and include an email giving us some background details on where the photos were taken, who you are, and how you're getting on.

Those of you a bit closer to home are welcome to contribute too. If you've got friends or relatives who've emigrated to other parts of the world or kids off on their OE, feel free to send in your pictures and we'll include them in our regular gallery updates.

Gidday from a "de facto" Nelsonian--I married a Quebec Road lass in 1980 and have been "to and fro'" numerous times from Wavell Heights in Brisbane.I call Nelson "God's Country"and the lucky ones who reside there are extremely fortunate. There will come a day when we decide to live permanently over there in The Woods area, after our "No3" child gets his wings and flies. News on the floods to our "rellies" and friends in NZ;Brisbane will take a long time to recover and some are saying 2-3 years.Having helped out in the 1974 floods,I found myself in a similar situation at Suncorp Stadium where I work, with all of the Western side(Castlemaine Street)completely under water and the water levels reaching 8 feet along the walls. We had to dump all articles that were inundated with floodwaters such as new massage tables,40 yr old strapping tables(old Lang Park),fridges, sponsors signs etc.We will rebuild and are looking at upto 4 weeks. That will be in time for the Super 15 Rugby and the semi.G.Final of Hyundai "A" League. Will keep in touch, good work Nelson Mail and will be in town Sept 16th to 30th for RWC. Have a nice day

Hi guys! I feel a bit of a fraud as I'm not a Kiwi travelling abroad or anything as exciting as that. I'm an English woman looking to come and live in Nelson with my family. My husband's father is a kiwi and we have thought for a long time about living in New Zealand having travelled there many years ago. I have just discovered this website and I'm eager to find out about Nelson before we make this huge decision. Is Nelson or it's surrounding area a good place to bring up kids and enjoy a good lifestyle? I'd appreciate your feedback. Andrea.

I'm a Nelsonian who moved to London and am now settled in Essex with my husband and young son. We love coming back to visit Nelson as it never changes and will hopefully move our family back someday :D Were currently enjoying the hot english summer but I miss tahuna beach and jumping off rocks road at high tide! For dinner tonight I'm recreating the lambrettas loose wheel, all my UK friends and family think it sounds weird when I describe it but love it once theyve eaten it!

Happy New Year to our friends in Nelson province and the Nelson Mail staff who have made this web site an interesting site to visit regularly while we sojourn in Cambodia. It's good to be able to catch up with the local headlines from time to time and see what other Nelsonians are doing. Cheers. June and Graham
