Contestants in the Richmond Mall Fashion in the Field brightened up a bleak afternoon at the Nelson Harness Racing Club's meeting at Richmond Park.
It may have been cold and grey outside yesterday but it was hot and colourful under the main marquee where 23 contestants wearing bright, colourful dresses and a bewildering array of hats paraded before the judges.
Contest debutant Maxine Lee of Nelson was declared the winner ahead of Richmond's Chanel McGlashen.
"I did a bit of modelling when I was younger but I have never been in a fashion contest before," said Mrs Lee, who was wearing a green dress by Pagani and black hat and shoes "borrowed from a good friend".
Head judge Leonie Trathen said the standard of entries was high this year with the ladies "accessorising very well".
"There were girls there who could have come straight off the catwalk. It was very close but we selected Maxine because she looked great from top to toe – she had the whole ensemble."
The winner received a $500 voucher from the Richmond Mall, a bouquet of flowers and a magnum of Lindauer.
