It was a carnival of coconuts and candy floss for those at the Appleby Country Fair on Saturday.

There was also wood chopping, crockery smashing, pony rides and performances from Appleby School's cultural groups.

Parent Tracy Dawson said the fair was about maximising the fun for the attendees while raising money for the new school hall.

"The school draws everyone together. Because we haven't had the hall, the school becomes the hub of the community."

Richmond resident Bridget Hobden said the fair was a great experience for the family and exciting for her son Josh, 3, who particularly enjoyed the petting zoo.

Wakefield resident Paula Murray said it was a positive day for the family. One of her two daughters had their first ever pony ride. "It was fantastic, they're having a blast, by the time they finish here they will be shattered and hopefully have a nice little sleep this afternoon."

The fair was in preparation for the school's 150th reunion celebrations which begin this Friday.

Nelson Mail photographer Marion van Dijk captured some of the fun at the fair. These photos and others taken at the fair are available at any Nelson Mail office.
