A record number of 177 sailboats, steamboats, speedboats and rowboats from around the country descended on Lake Rotoiti at the weekend for the 11th annual NZ Antique and Classic Boat Show.

More than 1000 people enjoyed Saturday's events, as did several hundred more on Sunday.

Overall winner Robert Gibson of Christchurch was "gobsmacked" with the result, and spent yesterday proudly showing off his 1952 dinghy and the Jens Hansen Cup he was awarded at a ceremony on Saturday night.

Gavin Bain, of Lyttelton, was the inaugural winner of the Ron Culley Trophy presented for the first time this year to the best steam boat. His Sewell steamboat Billy Boy was restored between 2004 and 2009.

These and other photographs taken at the event are available from Nelson Mail offices.
