Patrick Shone and Nic Turner won the men's title without dropping a set, but Sara Baldwin and Erin McCulloch had to work a little harder in claiming the women's crown at Saturday's Brightwater beach volleyball grand slam tournament.

Shone and Turner beat Bruce Boran and Matt Stewart 21-18 21-10 in their semifinal before prevailing 21-19 21-15 in a competitive final against Nick Adamson and Ben Glue. Adamson and Glue advanced to the final following a 21-15 21-13 semifinal win over Brent Dunlea and Gavin Ward.

In the women's event, the Blue Chip Nelson pairing of Baldwin and McCulloch were taken to three sets by the Bio Paints duo of Anna Chamberlain and Jess Harris before clinching the title.

They dropped the opening set 17-21 before recovering to win the next 21-9 and the decider 15-9.

Baldwin and McCulloch beat Jelena Vucinic and Melissa Duff 21-10 21-8 and Chamberlain and Harris beat Nadia Hylkema and Ashleigh Hancock 21-13 21-11 in their respective semifinals.

Four men's and five women's teams contested Saturday's event - one of several ranking tournaments for next month's New Zealand pro-tour.

Meanwhile, the Scramblers and the Redbacks won their respective men's and women's titles at the recent Holiday Shoppe indoor tournament.

The Scramblers beat the Waimea College boys' senior A team 3-2 in a close men's final, with Waimea winning the schools team. Hornby was third in the men's grade and Nayland A fourth.

The Marlborough Redbacks beat Nelson's Trafalgar 2-0 in the women's final, while the Marlborough Girls' College Junior Redbacks team claimed the top girls' school's title with a 2-1 win over Waimea A.
