Nathan Fa'avae's Ten Events team finished 22 minutes clear to retain their Rollo's Nelson 24-hour adventure race title at the weekend.
Fa'avae's four-person team of himself, Jodie Fa'avae and Ralph and Fleur Lattimore completed the six-stage race through the Nelson Lakes National Park in 14hr 38min to give Fa'avae his fifth title, with the two-man Team ITM combination of John Harris and Andrew Martin second in 15hr.
The four-person Paced by Pawsey team of Sophie Hart, Fleur Pawsey, Shane Armstrong and Nick Ross was third in 15hr 18min.
Busch Roofing, including Dan Busch and Tony Bateup, were fourth in 15hr 30min and the four-person R and R Sport team, comprising Luke Chapman, Trevor and Rachel Voyce and American Ali Bronsdon, rounded out the top five in 15hr 40min.
The event also doubled as race three of the Sportzhub New Zealand adventure racing championships.
Team ITM led through the opening 2km run stage from Kerr Bay, narrowly ahead of R and R Sport. Busch Roofing followed in third.
Once the teams passed Speargrass Hut, they climbed through the snow to Speargrass Saddle for the descent into the second check point at Angelus Hut.
Ten Events led the field into checkpoint two, ahead of Paced by Pawsey, with Team ITM just behind.
Once back at the Mt Robert carpark, the teams returned to Kerr Bay transition area for the kayak stage, involving five checkpoints around Lake Rotoiti.
Ten Events maintained their lead ahead of Paced by Pawsey, although Team ITM took some time out of both teams in maintaining third place.
Ten Events also led after the fifth stage orienteering-rogaine section where teams ran and biked to collect the 12 controls, although Team ITM had moved into second place ahead of Paced by Pawsey.
The sixth and final stage took the teams from St Arnaud to the Rainbow skifield and back with cold and ice making conditions uncomfortable and difficult.
The 12-hour duathlon was won by the Just Swanning Around team of Jo Harris and Margaret Parfitt in 12hr 26min, with the Cable Price Pirates combo of Dave Rudge, Jennifer Cassie, John Hart and Rob Hambrook winning the 12-hour adventure race in 13hr 43min.
