The Nelson Yacht Club is launching a new optimist green fleet to herald the start of their new season.

Based on the optimist boat, an international class for sailors up to 15 years old, the optimist green fleet is aimed at those coming out of the learn-to-sail programme and building their confidence and skills for competitive sailing.

There is plenty to learn about rules, rigging and sailing and the Nelson club provides a picturesque setting as well as facilities and coaching.

Richard Mangin and Derrick Harding, as parents, have volunteered to lead the optimist green fleet and optimist open fleet respectively.

They have put together an exciting programme of racing, instruction and games.

They have the support of Subway and the ASB Aquatic Centre in providing prizes, however they are still looking for more Nelson businesses to support the fleet by helping to provide coaching and equipment.

Some of the events coming up for the young sailors include the regional championships on November 7-8 at the Queen Charlotte Yacht Club in Picton and a new interschool competition for optimist sailors.

The plan is to launch the interschool series closer to Christmas.

Should the Tasman Rugby Union consider taking legal action against the NZRU in order to save the Makos?

Yes, if it comes to that and they have a good case.

No, that's not the New Zealand way.

Don't know and don't care.
