Robust field for stockcars

The South Island stockcar championship field stood at 37 today, although the eligibility of a couple of competitors was still being checked.
With 26 cars required for Saturday's finals, entrants will race in two groups over three heats tomorrow. Accumulated points from those three 15-lap heats will see the top 13 in each group progress to the finals.
With a full card, the Nelson Speedway Association has ruled out a repechage, meaning drivers will need a combination of skill and good luck to go through directly from their groups.
The championship will be decided over three 15-lap heats, with support races for non-qualifiers if enough cars remain to make up a field. Two new Nelson cars, owned by Matt Lee and Matt Evans, are expected to make their first appearances among the band of non-qualifiers on Saturday.
Other feature classes include a best pairs promotion for streetstocks tomorrow night, and the superstock club championships and round two of the three-quarter midget club championships will be held on Saturday. Racing at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway is scheduled to start at 7pm on both nights.
