Garin, Marist combine in under-18 side

Garin College is joining forces with the Marist Rugby Club to field a combined side in the Nelson Bays under-18 competition.
Marist has been a sponsor and strong supporter of Garin since the college started fielding rugby teams soon after its foundation.
The relationship has been taken to a new level with the introduction of this initiative.
"Garin College has a strong rugby ethos and has a philosophy of wanting to field the strongest possible team in each division that is competitive and gives players the right level of experience and a better chance to pursue representative opportunities," said Garin sports director Mike Aronsten.
The under-18 team will combine the best senior players from Garin with a number of local players who have left schools in the area and want to continue their rugby at that level.
"Quite often these players stop playing rugby because they can't find a suitable team to play with.
"From Garin's perspective, this concept will not only benefit the senior players, but will allow younger boys to play with their peers in a strong side."
Marist will register the players who have left school, including those from Garin, providing them with a pathway to senior rugby within the one organisation.
The concept also fits well with the Tasman union's aim to create strong relationships between rugby groups at all levels and strengthen player retention and provide continuing rugby opportunities.
Eligible players who are interested in joining the squad can contact Mike Aronsten at Garin College on 035439488 or Marist club captain Brett Thornalley 0212271649.
