Motueka's Ross Troughton emerged as the dominant rider after the final round of the Bunnings Mainland VMX series was held in Dovedale on Sunday.

Riding a 1986 Honda CR500, Troughton won both the pre-1986 and open classes, getting a maximum of 120 points in each.

Troughton won both classes despite completing only two of the three rounds.

Richmond's Adrian Moore was second in the pre-86 class on 100 points and Neil Wardle of Brightwater was third on 88.

In the open class, Frank Burns of Blenheim was second (94) and Nelson's Neville Curran third.

The earthquake in Christchurch prevented several riders who were in contention from competing, so the organisers decided that if they had enough points they could get placings even though they had not competed in the final round.

It meant that Christchurch's Rob Selby finished third with 105 points in the veterans' class and third in the pre-75 class with 85 points.

Winner of the pre-75 class was Wakefield's Matt Goodall on 170 points, with Richard Watson, of Takaka, second on 102.

Winner of the veterans was Nelson's Brent Horner, with 165 points, ahead of Nelson's Tim Davidson on 107.

Horner also took out the closely contested pre-86 midbore class with 129 points, with Neil Wardle of Brightwater only four points adrift and Adrian Moore of Richmond a further three points back on 122.

Horner had to borrow a machine for the last two races as he suffered a serious mechanical seizure in the day's first race and did not finish, meaning the trophy was not decided until the final race.

Takaka's Flynn Goldingham won the junior class with 139 points and was third in the evo smallbore class with 99 points after some consistent finishes. He was never the fastest rider but was the most consistent on his modified farm bike.

Second in the juniors was Richmond's Kirk Hay on 99, with Motueka's Curtis Goldingham third on 62.

The evo smallbore class was won by Greymouth's Mike Strompel with 150 points, followed by Nelson's Graeme Heywood on 102. Other results

Pre-78 class: Rob Anglesey (Tapawera) 132 1, Brett Burns (Blenheim) 105 2, Paul Manson (Rangiora) 66 3.
