BIG DAY OUT: Makos players, front Gary Redmond, left, and Mitchell Scott, and back, from left, James Lowe, Tim Perry, Steve Alfeld and Kieron Fonotia will be helping out at Sunday’s Fun Day.

Aspiring ITM Cup players of the future are set to foot it with their heroes as the Tasman Makos gear up for some community fun this weekend.

The full Tasman Makos squad of players and management mix it with local fans as they host a community event this Sunday at Trafalgar Park.

The Makos Family Funday, to be held between 10.30am and 1.30pm, will provide Makos fans with the opportunity to meet the 2012 team, get autographs and take photos.

The event will comprise a 5km fun run or walk which will go out from the Maitai Gate at Trafalgar Park toward Port Nelson and back. Makos players and volunteers will be manning water stations along the way to offer encouragement and photo opportunities. Some players will also join in and run with various groups for sections of the course.

All children who complete the run or walk will receive a free cheeseburger voucher upon completion, while fresh fruit will be provided to get the energy levels back up at the finish. Spot prizes will be offered to participants, including Makos apparel and free Segway rides.

A local radio station will be present to lead the warm-up exercises before the start and provide music through the event. Following the run there will be a skills and play session for the children with the players.

The Makos will be collecting gold coin donations from participants, with money raised going to support JAB rugby in the region.

The Tasman Makos squad wish to thank sponsors: Nelson Mail community papers, More FM and McDonald's. Their appreciation goes also to Nelson Events, Benge & Co, the Car Company, St John's, Event Audio, Shuttersport and About-N-Out Nelson Segway tours.
