Teams from west shine in Blenheim
Nelson and Golden Bay-Motueka teams dominated the results at the Marlborough open pairs and fours tournaments in Blenheim last weekend.
The pairs, on Saturday, was won by the Tapawera club duo of Hayden Warnes and Brendon Higgins who defeated Motueka's Rae Inglis and Jill Gennon 10-5 in the final. Third place equal, went to Nigel Warnes and Simon Hitchcock of Tapawera and Dale Burrell and Eric Peterson of Hope Club.
In the fours, played on Sunday over five rounds, two teams remained unbeaten. The winners after a countback on points were Nigel Warnes, Dom Palumbo, Chris Moffat and Simon Hitchcock. Runners-up were Lloyd and Rhonda Bellis, Lynn Sloper and Barry Chinnery.
On Saturday, at North Wellington, Ryan Eggers of Wakefield represented Nelson at the national under-18 singles finals. He qualified for the knockout stages but was eliminated in the last eight.
Tonight at the Warnes Stadium in Stoke, the Nelson association hosts its champion of champions pairs event. Nigel and Hayden Warnes (Tapawera), on recent performances, start as favourites. Strong challenges can also be expected from the Stoke Club pair of Barry Beams and Dom Palumbo, Suburban's Max Bennett and Jenny Mason and Club Waimea's Lewis DellaBosca and Phil Jordan.
The Nelson Indoor Bowls Association will hold a mini garage sale at the Warnes Stadium on Saturday morning.
