Hodson wins bronze at Cyprus singles
Nelson's Peter Hodson has won the bronze medal at the world champion of champions singles bowls tournament in Cyprus.
Hodson helped complete a remarkable Kiwi performance after New Zealand's women's representative Sandra Keith claimed the women's title with a win over Zimbabwe's Jane Rigby in the final.
It was the third successive year that New Zealand had won the women's title, and followed on from Nelson bowler Jo Edwards' success last year at the event.
For Hodson, it capped a memorable tournament after he'd finished top of his pool to move directly into the semifinals. His final 15-2 7-10 3-1 pool win over Wales' Jason Greenslade left the Stoke club bowler with an impressive 10-2 win record and two points clear of both Scotland's Mark Kelsey and Hong Kong China's Stanley Lai in second equal place.
However, as he'd done in pool play, Lai proved too good for Hodson, winning 12-3 7-7 to promote him directly into the final against Malaysia's Hizlee Abd Rais. Lai had previously scored a 6-10 12-5 5-0 win over Hodson in the second round of pool play.
Rais, who had finished third in pool 1, beat Lai 13-6 7-5 in the men's final.
Meanwhile, Keith atoned for her only loss in pool play, a 5-5 6-8 loss to Malta's Carmen Spiteri, with an 11-3 10-9 win over Spiteri in the semifinals. Keith then won the title with an 11-3 10-9 win over Rigby in the final.
Both Hodson and Keith had qualified for the tournament by winning their respective New Zealand national singles titles earlier this year.
