Tasman finish third in quad rep tournament
Tasman couldn't improve on last year's showing when finishing third at the weekend's annual quadrangular representative golf tournament at Greenacres.
Tasman suffered losses to both eventual champion Canterbury and Wellington before salvaging a half against last year's winners, North Harbour, in Sunday's final morning round.
Tasman's 3-5 loss to Wellington meant that Tasman also handed over the Taswell Cup, contested between the two provinces.
Canterbury were unbeaten, beating Tasman 5-3 in Saturday's opening round before also securing wins over North Harbour (5.5-2.5) in the afternoon's second round ahead of Sunday's 4.5-3.5 win over Wellington to decide the title.
Wellington finished a clear second with two wins, while Tasman and North Harbour could manage only half a point each after their 4-4 Sunday morning result.
Only two Tasman players emerged unbeaten, with No 2 Hamish Campbell and Westport's Glen Drummond, at No 8, each claiming two wins and a half, Campbell on his home course and Drummond in a continuation of some impressive recent form.
Tasman No 4 Nick Ludbrook began his account with a decisive 8 and 7 win over Canterbury's Tom Turner before also beating Wellington's Braden Mazey in round two. But his hopes of a clean sweep were dashed by North Harbour's Jason Gulasekharam with a 4 and 3 loss in Sunday's final round.
Canterbury No 5 Nic Kay was the only player to secure three straight wins.
Tasman selector Alistair Palmer has retained the same eight-man lineup for this weekend's South Island interprovincial at Dunedin's Balmacewen course, and said that the Tasman players would be all the better for their quadrangular hitout.
"Like they were in Rarangi last year, to me they looked underdone," Palmer said.
"It's not really excuses, but basically the other [teams] have all got so much [more] preparation. We'll have a really strong interprovincial Toro team and I think, next week, we'll probably do a little bit better again." Results
