Tasman completed their final dress rehearsal for next month's Toro interprovincial with a fourth placing at the weekend's South Island teams golf event in Dunedin.
Tasman won two of their four encounters to finish tied on points with Canterbury, but were fourth on individual games won.
Southland continued their winning form, scoring three points and 22 games to be the runaway winner of the tournament played over four rounds at Balmacewen. Otago finished in second place with 2.5 points and 21 games, leaving Canterbury in third place with two points and 16.5 games. Tasman finished with two points and 15 games, leaving Aorangi South Canterbury winless with only 5.5 games.
Tasman beat Otago 4.5-3.5 and Aorangi 5.5-2.5, but lost to both Southland and Canterbury by identical 5.5-2.5 margins.
Tasman No 7 Tom Facer, a former Otago and Balmacewen player, exploited his local knowledge to finish unbeaten with wins over Canterbury's Daniel Laughton (5/3) and Aorangi's Adam Marshall (4/3) and halves with Otago's Kayne Wardell and Southland's Daniel Mills. Southland defended the South Island title it won last year and is now on target to defend the national Toro title at Balmacewen in December which it won in Gisborne last year.
Although Southland will be without New Zealand No 1 Vaughan McCall, who has received an invitation to compete in the Australian Open in December, the top five who played last weekend showed they have the ability to make it two in a row.
Individual results showed the secret to Southland's win with No 3 Scott Hellier the only one of the 40 golfers to post four wins. He was supported by Jeremy Hall (No 4) with three wins and a half while No 8 Daniel Mills was also unbeaten with two wins and two halves.
For Otago, Brent McEwan (No 1), Mark Collie (No 6) and Kayne Wardell (No 7) all emerged unbeaten with three wins and a half each. Besides Facer, other unbeaten players were Canterbury's Oscar Cadenhead and Michael McAuley.
Tasman selector Alistair Palmer is scheduled to confirm his final five-man Toro lineup this week.
