Nelson produced perfect conditions as the Top of the South Blokart Club hosted the first day of the South Island Open at the Vortex Windkarting Track in Richmond yesterday.
Around 45 competitors, including world champions and the inventor of the blokart, Paul Beckett, were weaving in the wind, as they took on the tight, technical course of rings in grid formation.
Action was due to continue today, while tomorrow the club will host the Rabbit Island Endurance Race, 20km of beach racing on the front beach from 11am.
Club office president Melissa Francis welcomed spectators to watch the show, and see the top sailors manoeuvre the three-wheeled buggies, with a wind-surf type sail, either along the sand or across the tarmac.
