Former Athletics Nelson runner Julian Matthews missed out in a bid for his fourth sub-four-minute mile.
Matthews, running his final season for Providence College, finished seventh in 4min 33sec at Saturday's Boston Terrier Classic on the banked 200-metre indoor track in a race won by Olympic 10,000m silver medallist Galen Rupp in 3min 50.92sec. Matthews' team-mate Dominic Channon placed 13th in the 3000m in 8:15.09.
Several other former Nelson runners competed in 3000m races in indoor meets around the United States last weekend.
Harry Dixon, of Eastern Michigan, won at the Grand Valley State meet in 8:24.67. Matt Russ, of North Texas, finished second at the Houston Invitational in 8:24.08.
Craig Lautenslager, of the University of Texas-Arlington, was 13th at the Bill Bergan Invitational at Iowa State. Lautenslager's time of 8:25.45 was the third fastest 3000m time in his school's history.
