Countdown to Touch down

22:55, Feb 03 2013
GAME ON: Action during last Tuesday’s social grade Touch module at Tahunanui.

Last week’s games saw a few defaults with some players still on holiday, plus a few keen team members headed for Wellington and an early start celebrating this weekend’s sevens tournament.

What was noticeable throughout the week is that a few teams need to brush up on their uniforms, especially with finals not far away. Leading into the February 23 finals, it is important to have correct uniforms and good knowledge of the rules.

There’s only two weeks left of points play before the finals now and the team standings are extremely close in most grades, except the women’s grade where there are three standout teams.

Rulings for finals
In the lead-up to the finals, some teams may have more than one referee if resources allow. The referees are also preparing for the finals so use this time to practise working with support referees and on the interchange procedure to ensure they are ready and games run smoothly. The refs usually help teams get ready and come to grips with rulings that can be overlooked on normal module nights. These include incorrect substitutions, tap procedures, what is a sub box etc.

During the next few weeks we will expand on various rulings and procedures so stay tuned.

The substitution rule is probably the most overlooked ruling during normal module night and is difficult for a single referee to manage.

On finals day there are usually two or even three referees per game. During the remaining weeks, referees will encourage teams –especially potential finalists - to adhere to the proper interchange procedure so they will not lose possession unnecessarily.

A penalty is awarded to the non-offending team at the position of the ball at the time when the offence is first identified, or directly forwards of this position, whichever has the greatest advantage to the non-offending team.

Conditions of entry
Teams risk losing points and forfeiting games if they don’t adhere to the important conditions of playing. A few teams may have been playing unregistered players; easily recognisable by the lack of uniform and sometimes playing in several different teams on the same night etc. If teams suspect opposition players are not registered they must first point out the individual(s) to the referee.

The referee will ask the team captain if the player is registered and if the answer is yes, the query will then be taken to the module co-ordinator to check after the match. The game will commence, but if the team is found to be in breach of the rules, it will forfeit all points.

Nelson Module and Junior Module cancellation notices will be posted on Facebook and on the local radio stations. Radio announcements will be after 2pm for the Nelson module and after 2pm for the junior module. A reminder, any decisions to cancel any senior module nights will not be made until after 2pm. Please respect this and do not contact the module coordinator before that time.
