Only two Athletics Nelson competitors took part in Saturday's Mahar Cup Athletics Meet in Greymouth, but they did not go home empty handed.
Dale Pritchard and Chris Brake returned to Nelson with eight victories, several records and the Mawhera Shield. They won every event they entered.
Pritchard set Mahar Cup, Tasman Centre, Athletics Nelson and West Coast records with his throw of 46.78m in the senior men's discus.
He also set a West Coast record in the shot put with 14.16m and won the javelin with 42.62m.
Pritchard was awarded the Mawhera Shield for the top performance at the meet and has the third best discus throw and shot put efforts in New Zealand this season.
Brake won the senior men's 100m in 11.6sec, the 200m in 23.9sec, the triple jump with 12.54m, the high jump with 1.75m, and the junior men's long jump with 6.08m.
Athletics Nelson coaches, citing lack of competition and a dwindling number of participants from the Marlborough and West Coast teams over the past few years, unanimously agreed at a meeting in October not to organise a team for the Mahar Cup this season. But they encouraged athletes to go on their own.
West Coast easily outnumbered and outpointed Marlborough to win the Mahar Cup.
Pritchard and Brake will be back in action at Saturday's Harold Nelson Classic at the Saxton Field Athletics Track. The meet begins at 5pm and will finish with the New Zealand junior men's and women's 3000m championships, at 7.20pm.
