Nelson College school leavers Daniel Grimes and James Graham had the honour of receiving their blue hats for graduating first 11 players from cricket legends father and son Lance and Chris Cairns.

Their coach Garry MacDonald acknowledged their skills and contributions at the college's fundraiser function last night, where the Cairns were guest speakers.

MacDonald said Grimes, an all-rounder would be a big loss.

"You will be sorely missed, you have been a leader in our team. How we are going to replace you I'm not sure."

Grimes, 17, described as an opening bowler and punishing middle-order batsman, is off to Otago University to do a Bachelor of Commerce degree.

Graham, 18, a top-order left-hand batsman, plans to stay in Nelson and will carry on playing for Nelson College A.

"He is every coach's dream, because he will just do what you want him to," MacDonald said.
