Hunt makes big impact
Former Nelson College rugby captain Mitchell Hunt has had an impressive start to his stint with Auckland.
Hunt, who most recently represented Nelson College in December - making the tournament team at the Condor National sevens - has made the step up from secondary schools level to the big time.
Hunt has made the final cut for the 12-man Auckland sevens squad to contest the national sevens title in Rotorua tomorrow.
Initially named in the wider Auckland squad of 30 players, Hunt made the final team following an outstanding performance at the Mount Maunganui sevens tournament, won by Auckland.
Coaches Sake Sotutu and Paul Feeney were impressed with Hunt's defensive abilities.
Being the youngest and smallest member of the 10-time champions, Sotutu commented that Hunt is a "small man with a massive heart".
Hunt is also a oval ball talent in high demand.
The playmaker, kicker and defensive sweeping specialist was approached by a Melbourne-based AFL club offering him the opportunity to attend an AFL trial camp.
Hunt had already signed a two-year deal with Auckland rugby and will begin studies at Auckland University next month.
