Christchurch wins team sailing
In difficult conditions, Christchurch Boys High School took the overall title at the Top of the South Secondary Schools Regional Team Sailing Regatta in Nelson last weekend.
The regatta was hosted by Nelson Bays Youth Teams Racing Association and was based at the Nelson Yacht Club.
The regatta involved two teams from Christchurch, three from Marlborough and seven from Nelson Bays.
With 90 sailors it was very busy with the constant ferrying of sailors out to the course adjacent to Haulashore Island.
Team sailing involves two teams of three 420 yachts competing over a short course.
Sailors had to contend with light winds and at times strong tides.
Nelson College A battled to finish second overall behind Christchurch while third place went to Marlborough Boys.
The silver fleet was won by Nelson College for Girls A followed by Waimea College.
Top umpires from Christchurch, Jim Park and Don le Page, helped with umpiring and mentored younger umpires.
Over the three days Nelson Bays sailors were able to complete a full round-robin for seeding purposes.
Once the fleet was divided into gold and silver fleets there were two further round-robins.
Competition was strong in both fleets with the top positions changing throughout the competition.
The Nelson Bays Youth Teams Racing Association acknowledged the support of volunteers, Nelson Yacht Club and sponsors.
