Waimea College continued their unbeaten run with two contrasting wins on day two of the South Island senior secondary schoolgirls' basketball tournament at Saxton Stadium yesterday.

One of two teams to have emerged as potential finalists, Waimea progressed through pool play with a 100-36 win over Marian College (Christchurch), junior Gracie Roberts starring with 28 points and assisted by her older sister Summer with 21.

Waimea later beat a desperate Rangi Ruru side 46-45 in a close and exciting game to end pool play with four wins.

Marlborough Girls' College were also unbeaten to head pool 2 after wins over Aranui and Cashmere.

Nelson College for Girls started day two with another loss, going down 56-46 to Rangiora. But faced with elimination, they bounced back to beat Aranui HS 59-44 in the evening.

They now cross over with Rangi Ruru in a must-win game to qualify for the secondary school nationals in Palmerston North at the end of September.

Waimea, by securing top place in the pool, have already qualified and are now playing for seedings.

Games continue at Saxton Stadium today with the final scheduled for 4pm.
