Nelson College have qualified for the quarterfinals of the India Shield national secondary schoolboys hockey tournament after finishing second in their pool yesterday at Saxton Turf.

Nelson had ended day one with a win and a loss in pool C before confirming second place with a 1-0 win over Lindisfarne College, Myles Whittaker scoring Nelson's goal, and were due to meet pool A winners Bethlehem College in today's quarterfinals. Unbeaten Macleans College finished top of pool C, following two wins and a draw.

Waimea College began their day positively yesterday with a high-scoring 5-3 win over Rangitoto College in pool B. Pat O'Connor-Leys scored four of Waimea's goals, with Tom Laney adding the other. However, they stumbled to a heavy 1-4 loss to Timaru BHS in their afternoon match, O'Connor-Leys again the goalscorer, to leave Waimea bottom of their pool. They were due to play Rosehill College today.

St Paul's Collegiate scored three straight wins, including Monday's impressive 6-1 win over Waimea, to finish top of the pool.

Meanwhile, Wellington College continued their dominating form with another comprehensive victory, beating a hapless Rosehill College side 10-0 to comfortably finish top of pool D. Wellington ended pool play with a staggering 28 goals to none against, having previously beaten Massey HS 11-0 and Hutt International Boys' 7-0.

In today's other quarterfinal matchups, Wellington College were to meet Rangitoto College, St Paul's Collegiate were to play Hutt International Boys and Mt Albert Grammar were scheduled to meet Macleans College.
