Nelson College remain in the title hunt after a convincing 5-0 win over Bethlehem College secured them a semifinal berth at the India Shield secondary schoolboys hockey tournament in Nelson.
Nelson were due to meet Wellington College today for a place in tomorrow's final at the Saxton turf, after the Wellington side edged past Rangitoto College in their toughest contest of the week.
After amassing 28 goals in their previous three pool games, Wellington conceded their first goal of the tournament to a Rangitoto side now out of title contention. Connor Hamilton was the player to finally breach Wellington's previously impenetrable defence, with Trevor Garret and Shayam Bhana scoring for Wellington.
Scott Kearney scored a hat-trick and Henry Westenra scored twice in Nelson's impressive win over Bethlehem.
Mt Albert Grammar and Hutt International Boys', coached by former New Zealand international and the head of Sparc Peter Miskimmin, are scheduled to meet in the other semifinal. Mt Albert survived with a tight 2-1 win over Macleans College, Jeremy Barnett and Wade Somani scoring for the winners, while Hutt beat Hamilton's St Paul's Collegiate by the same margin. Tim Robertson and Tom Lancashire scored Hutt's goals.
Meanwhile, Waimea College were to play Burnside HS for a chance at tomorrow's 9th to 10th place playoff after beating Rosehill College 5-4. Pat O'Connor-Leys scored two of Waimea's goals, with Daniel McIvor, Can Mayne-Ord and Michael Wilkens scoring one each.
