The Waimea College girls' basketball team have narrowly missed out on a place in the final of the Zone 4 junior basketball premiership tournament being held at Saxton Stadium.
Waimea were beaten 60-55 by Dunedin's St Hilda's Collegiate School. Getting into foul trouble early in the match cost Waimea at the end of the game as power forward Georgia Davies had to sit down at a crucial time as she attracted four personal foul calls.
Waimea captain Gloria O'Connor top-scored for the home side with 20 points while Davies ended with 16. Coach Craig Davies said the hard thing for the side would be getting back into the right head space to play in the third/fourth playoff against Marlborough Girls College.
"It was a good game, but Georgia was our big forward and had four fouls from about halftime. Most of our points were coming close to the basket so it was hard from there. Now we will have to refocus for our next game, which will be a tough task."
