The Czech Republic edged out New Zealand on the final day of the World Fly Fishing Championships last week.

Though Rotorua was used as the base for the championships, all the fishing took place outside the district on the Waihou, Waimakariri and Wanganui rivers and two small lakes near Turangi.

The top two teams alternated in the lead over the first two days but the Czech Republic came through to clinch the title with wins in both sessions on the final day on Friday. The result meant New Zealand narrowly failed to repeat its 1991 success when the event was also centred on Rotorua.

The winner, runner-up and France all landed more than 300 fish during the event.

Martin Deoz of the Czech Republic was the top placed individual angler with Julian Daguillanes of France second.

The best performing member of the New Zealand team was Des Armstrong who came sixth overall.

The event finished with a parade through Rotorua culminating with the closing ceremony and presentation of medals at the band rotunda in the Government Gardens.
