SMASH: Senior Constable Aaron Hogue examines the Glengarry Book Exchange after a driver accidentally drove her Nissan Pulsar through a window.

An elderly Invercargill driver has escaped injury after smashing her car through the front windows of a book store in the Glengarry Shopping Centre.

The woman, in her 80s, pulled up to use the bank machine next to the Glengarry Book Exchange but instead of making her withdrawal, deposited her sedan into the book shop.

Broken glass and books were left strewn across the footpath and the store after the incident about 10am.

The book exchange was closed at the time and no one was inside.

The driver's nephew said his aunt was getting money for her appointment at the hairdresser.

''She is a wee bit shaken up but she still made her appointment,'' he said.

Emergency service were called to the scene shortly afterwards.

Constable Paul Moylan said it appeared the driver's foot slipped off the brake and then she hit the wrong pedal.
