A 19-year-old Westport man has been fined $400 for walking into Westport police station drinking alcohol and carrying cannabis resin.
Eptai Taiwhanga pleaded guilty in Westport District Court yesterday to breaching Westport's liquor ban and possessing a Class B drug.
Taiwhanga went into the foyer of the police station at 12.50am on January 1 drinking a bottle of beer.
He was arrested for breaching the liquor ban and during a routine search police found a foil tablet with 0.6g of cannabis resin in his pocket.
Judge Jane McMeeken said Taiwhanga was "incredibly stupid".
She described the incident as a "double whammy".
"You had cannabis in your pocket and drew attention to yourself by drinking in a police station."
