A man who dreamed of being an imperial stormtrooper may well wish he could use The Force after his $5000 costume was stolen from outside his Wellington home.

The Paparangi man had his specially ordered suit taken from his back porch before he even got a chance to try it on.

The rare black Star Wars costume – which includes full body armour, helmet and laser blaster – was ordered from overseas and delivered by FedEx to his back door in Helston Rd after midday on November 3.

The head of Wellington's burglary squad, Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton, said the owner did not get to open the parcel and was "quite distraught" at the loss.

It was the first time Mr Thornton had heard of an item such as this being stolen.

"It's not a laptop or an iPod. Obviously for the person who stole it there's a novelty value. You'd want to dress up and impress your friends. I can't imagine it would be hidden away in a cupboard.

"It's not something you can put on Trade Me. Someone will know about it."

Mr Thornton said the theft may have been planned because it seemed too coincidental to be an opportunistic crime.
