The mysterious disappearance of one of Rolf Harris' best loved paintings from a warehouse in England has sparked accusations of a "dark conspiracy" in the fine art world.

The Australian entertainer is also an accomplished artist, and Lovers on the Seine II - worth almost 100,000 pounds (NZ$229,849) - was acclaimed as one of his best pieces.

But the painting has not been seen since its disappearance from a Warwick warehouse in 2005, and Maxine Hardy, widow of art collector, Dean Hardy, has since fought a marathon legal campaign to find out what happened to it.

Judge Simon Brown QC sparked a major art world scandal when he ruled in June 2009 that the painting had been "dishonestly appropriated" by Birmingham-based Washington Green Fine Art Publishing.
