Knitters are being urged to contribute to a woolly project that's hoping to earn the title of Australia's longest scarf.

Almost 500 sections are currently sitting in a warehouse in Victoria's north-east, waiting to be joined together to form a 30 kilometre long scarf.

The brainchild of Wangaratta knitting group Stitched Up, the scarf project has involved almost 4000 knitters across the nation knitting contributions over five years.

Coordinator Wendy Norman says the scarf is due to be stitched together and officially measured in Wangaratta in September.

But she says her friends in the Stitched Up committee will have to help her sew hundreds of pieces together before any records are broken.

"I can't see my hallway at the moment," Mrs Norman said.

"There are rolls of scarf everywhere."

But she thinks the project has had a lot of benefits.

"It has actually encouraged a lot of people to knit -- people who haven't knitted for years in their 80s and 90s have signed up."

A 60-metre portion of the scarf is currently on display at a Melbourne craft fair, offering knitters a final opportunity to contribute to the project.

After its launch the scarf will be divided up and donated to charities to produce blankets.
