Hiding in a portaloo was not enough to throw police dogs off the scent of a man who fled after leading police on a brief high-speed chase in Mataura on Saturday night.

Constable Martin Cupit said the man had been allegedly driving a Nissan Primera that took off when approached by police just north of Mataura on State Highway 1.

While reaching speeds of 120kmh on the open road, the car slowed as it led police on an eight-minute chase around the town, he said.

The driver ended up going down a dead-end street and was forced to flee on foot.

Police dogs located the man on a building site nearby, hiding in a portaloo, Mr Cupit said.

A 23-year-old Gore man, Darren Ian Low, appeared in the Invercargill District Court yesterday charged with failing to stop for police, driving while disqualified and dangerous driving.

He was remanded, without plea, to appear in the Gore District Court tomorrow.
