He ain't a hound dog – he's the winner of the Elvis Down Under competition.

A regular Elvis impersonator at gigs around Australia for a decade, Peter Triantis – stage name Elvis to the T – took top spot at the weekend event at the Petone Working Men's Club.

Triantis won with his renditions of Suspicious Minds and I Can't Stop Loving You.

The 300 fans who crowded in to the club to hear the 16 contestants from New Zealand and Australia battle it out on Saturday night were "all shook up".

Triantis is based in Melbourne and has his own band, the Dellairs.

Another Australian, Ross Mancini from Sydney, took third place in the competition. In second place was New Zealand's premier Elvis tribute artist, Brendon Chase, from Auckland.

Chase has been entertaining professionally as Elvis for about 16 years.
