An intoxicated Irish man who walked away from an ATM machine in the centre of Queenstown on Monday night without the $800 he had withdrawn got a pleasant surprise when he visited Queenstown Police Station the next day.
Senior Constable Chris Blackford said the man had been as ''drunk as a rat'' and had walked away without his cash or bank card.
Luckily for the man, an honest young Otago man found the cash and card and handed it in to police.
"Talk about the luck of the Irish,'' Mr Blackford said.
