A skateboarder doing about 65kmh down a Colorado mountain had his trip rudely interrupted by a small deer.

Footage of the collision, which has become a YouTube hit, shows the skateboard rider grabbing at the animal as it races diagonally across the road in front of him.

Rider Ryan Vitale, 17, a Salt Lake City High School junior, crashed head over heels out of the Buffalo Bill Downhill race in Golden, Colorado on the weekend.

Vitale received some grazes in the crash but walked away without any broken bones.

He told Denver 7 News: "I didn't know it was coming at me. It just all happened really fast."

The deer also appeared to be okay.

In last year's race a helicopter, from which video of the race was being shot, crash-landed near spectators. No one was hurt that time, either.
