It was a case of man bites dog and dog bites back ... and Dexter proved his bite is worse than his bark.
A 31-year-old man needed stitches to his arm after allegedly biting the police dog while being arrested in New South Wales' Illawarra region on Saturday night.
Police were called to a Berkley residence about 11pm after reports of an apprehended violence order breach.
Police will allege the man ''grabbed Dexter around the neck and tried to bite him''.
''He has gotten his teeth into Dexter,'' Acting Inspector Jack Brown said. ''At that point the dog has retaliated, biting him. As you can imagine, Dexter did a better job of it.
''It was a nasty bite, not too much blood but there is a portion of his skin missing on the right biceps. Dexter's OK. An examination found bruising to the ear. He's had a full tetanus shot and is fine.''
The man was charged with destroy, damage property, commit an act of cruelty upon an animal, resist police, possess prescribed restricted substance and contravene an apprehended violence order.
He has been refused bail and will appear in Wollongong Local Court on Monday.
