MOVING HOUSE: Bill McNamara and his son, Jade, owners of Transit Homes Ltd, with the house they are taking to this weekend’s Invercargill Christmas Races.

The owner of an Invercargill house-moving company has taken a novel approach to race-day accommodation, opting to take one of his transportable homes, rather than a traditional marquee, to Saturday's Christmas race meeting.

Bill McNamara, owner of house-moving company Transit Homes, decided to take a house to the races about four months ago after learning many marquees had already been booked out.

The house will be mounted on the back of a trailer with a deck built out the front for the 20 racegoers the company would be hosting.

The 90-square-metre house came from the Christchurch residential red zone, but had no real damage, he said.

Mr McNamara has bought "60 or so" red-zoned houses from AMI Insurance and is in the process of selling them, although few have so far been moved.

He also races a few horses, but would have to wait and see if a promising young horse qualified today for one of the races at the weekend meeting, he said.
