Sponsors were lined up, prizes were organised, dates were set - Miss Kauri Coast 2014 was shaping up to be bigger and better than last year.
But with only four entries in this year's contest, chairwoman Grace Portanger was "gutted" to have to pull the pin on the unique Kaipara contest.
"It's really disheartening for us as a committee. The local community and businesses were all great, we had all the support to make it a successful event, but this year the girls just weren't interested," she says.
She says getting things like this off the ground in small communities can be difficult, but following the success of last year's competition, she didn't think participation would be a problem.
"We wanted to make it a glamorous event for parents and kids to enjoy, and last year the girls had so much fun," she says.
After targeting facebook and putting the word out to gain enough interest, Portanger and the committee were resolved to the fact that it just wasn't going to happen this year.
Whether another contest will run next year is unknown at this stage.
"We're just going to let it settle for a while, and see how everyone reacts to the news.
"The hard part of running it again would be to get the sponsors back on board after you've cancelled the show once," she says.
