Early rising New Zealanders have had a planetary treat this morning as the crescent Moon and Venus rose together.

Unusually, Venus is currently so bright that for the observant it will be visible above the crescent Moon well into the morning, following dawn.
Venus, which earlier this year transited the Sun, will later today slip behind the Moon.
Known as the occultation of Venus, it will be visible during daylight across a wide area of the Northern Hemisphere - but not in New Zealand.
