The teenager hit by a vehicle near Gore last week has died.
Brodie Carroll, 19, had been in a serious condition in Dunedin Hospital since May 17 after being struck by a vehicle on State Highway 94, about 6km north of Gore.
Police confirmed Carroll died on Saturday evening after his life support was switched off.
Senior Sergeant Dave Scott said the matter had now been referred to the coroner and inquiries into the incident were continuing.
It was too early to say whether charges would be laid, he said.
Tributes from friends poured on to Facebook at the weekend, with many mentioning Carroll's good sense of humour.
Hannah Swain, named on the site as Carroll's girlfriend, wrote she was proud of the fight the teen had put up.
"You are so strong and brave! ... You cared for me so much, always asking if I was OK, if I wanted or needed anything you would run to get it. You are a special person Brodie Carroll you will forever be in my heart, and I am so so thankful we got to spend your last years together."
