A Queenstown man facing drug importation charges after allegedly ordering 2 grams of MDMA (ecstasy) through the internet has been remanded until July 14.

Matthew Richard Hill, a 22-year-old telemarketer, allegedly imported the drug on June 4, and was arrested last night after Queenstown police received information from New Zealand Customs.

Senior constable Julian Cahill, of Queenstown, said Hill had allegedly bought the drugs over the internet by money transfer and had arranged for the package to be sent to a PO box in Frankton.

Appearing in the Queenstown District Court this morning, Hill was supported by family members and his fiance.

Police prosecutor Ian Collin told Judge Michael Turner that police did not oppose bail.

''On the face of it, the level of offending could appear significantly high,'' Collin  said. ''But this is at the lower end of the scale, and the defendant has had no previous matters [before the court]. He has roots here in Queenstown, and in light of that we have no objection to bail.''

Hill's lawyer Dale Lloyd said that Hill was born, lived in and worked in Queenstown, and held only an expired passport, which negated any risk of him fleeing the country.

The judge ordered Hill not to leave Queenstown or apply for a passport.
