Australia's most popular breakfast show, Sunrise, which is being shot in Queenstown over two days, could be back to showcase the resort in summer, its executive producer reckons.

Yesterday Queenstown's waterfront was abuzz with crew, hosts, cranes, cameras and live-broadcast trucks well before sunrise and well into the morning.

Sunrise also brought about 50 viewers who had won contests, and most of them had not been to New Zealand before. Australian holidaymakers and temporary Queenstown residents were on hand to cheer and hold up signs for family and friends at home.

Sunrise executive producer Michael Pell said these ingredients contributed to a successful live show filmed outside the usual studio confines. He said the show could be back.

"It wouldn't be a regular thing, because the expense is so huge but, if we did, it'd be in summer," he said. "It's a beautiful, beautiful location, much more picturesque than many other places usually lauded for their beauty. It's right on Australia's doorstep, and more and more Aussies are starting to click onto Queenstown."

Sunrise is broadcasting from Coronet Peak this morning. It has been the most popular Australian breakfast show for 11 years on the trot.
