A man is trapped in his truck after driving off a bank near the Central Otago town of Alexandra.

A police communications spokesman said emergency services were called to the scene of the crash on Little Valley Rd, near Alexandra, just after 2pm.

Emergency services had called a tow truck to help stabilise the ute, as it initially had been ''teetering'' on the bank, the spokesman said.

The driver was still inside the vehicle, injured but conscious, he said.

A helicopter was waiting to take the man to hospital, he said.

No further details are immediately available.
