A 65-year-old man has died after a truck v car crash near the Southland town of Bluff this morning.
The crash, involving a car and truck and trailer unit, happened at 7.18am near the Fowler Oysters factory on Bluff Rd and blocked the only road into the town.
Senior Sergeant Craig Brown, of Dunedin, said a male passenger, travelling in a Mazda car towards Bluff, had died at the scene.
The driver of the car was taken to Southland Hospital with moderate injuries, while the truck driver was shaken but not injured, Brown said.
It appeared the car collided with the rear of the truck-and-trailer unit that was travelling in the same direction, he said.
The crash happened near roadworks just outside of Bluff.
The road was closed for about four hours, opening again just after 11am.
Police have not yet released the name of the dead man and investigations are continuing.
Earlier this morning, a witness said the road was blocked and with no detours available and police told motorists in a long line of traffic trying to get out of Bluff to go home.
