Police are seeking witnesses to two early morning assaults in Invercargill.

Southland police say they have not yet arrested anyone and are looking for more information about the two incidents which took place in close proximity.

Invercargill police say the first assault occurred about 1.30am today in the Newfield Tavern carpark in Centre Street.

A 41-year old man was knocked to the ground by an assailant and was treated for minor injuries at Southland Hospital, police said.

A short time later a 28-year-old man was chased to a property at nearby Wye Street. It appeared he was chased there by a group of people and was also assaulted, police said.

The victim received injuries around his head and eye. He was initially taken to Southland Hospital for treatment and later was flown to Dunedin Hospital.
