Police are investigating the cause of death of a man after he was found floating in the water in Doubtful Sound.
Sergeant Ian Martin, of Invercargill, said the person was on a private boat in the remote body of water in Fiordland.
The man's body was flown to Te Anau by helicopter.
Next of kin had been advised and the death referred to the coroner, Martin said.
Doubtful Sound is 421 metres deep, making it the deepest fiord in the Fiordland area. It is described as long and winding with three distinct "arms" and several outstanding waterfalls in the area from Deep Cove to the open ocean, a distance of around 40.4 kilometres.
It is a destination for several cruise companies.
