Otago University's recognisable clock tower building is the subject of a variety of campus refurbishments in a construction overhaul worth $650m.

The initial plans were approved a year ago, but the university's council announced the final plan at a staff forum today.

The 15-year renovation plan includes an upgrade of research and teaching facilities, introduction of a dental school and new arts, music, botany and biomedical research buildings.

New student and academic service hubs will be built as well as a marine science teaching facility.

It will coincide with a number of health and safety measures including earthquake strengthening and access improvement.

The university's historic Victorian clock tower from 1879 will also be refurbished.

Vice chancellor professor Harlene Hayne said: "We want to improve what is already a first-class experience for students, for teachers and for researchers and we want the campus to be enjoyed by the communities in which we live."
