A police officer was bashed with a motorcycle helmet after chasing down a fleeing motorcyclist in Dunedin last night.
Police attempted to stop a motorcyclist in central Dunedin about 9.50pm.
When the motorcyclist refused to stop, he was pursued, reaching speeds of 100kmh at points, before he slowed and crashed at low speed.
As the officer arrested him, the motorcyclist is alleged to have run swinging his riding helmet, striking the officer around the head area numerous times.
Police said the motorcyclist punched the officer around the head area several times before more officers arrived to subdue him.
The officer was taken to Dunedin Hospital where he received treatment and was discharged.
The rider is due to appear in court this morning facing driving-related charges, drug charges and aggravated assault on an officer.
