A Tapanui, Otago, man taken home from the pub in a  courtesy coach was picked up hours later by police as he was driving back to the pub on his four-wheel-drive motorbike.

Sergeant Clint Wright, of Gore, said the 25-year-old man and his wife were riding their motorbike on the Tapanui-Raes Junction highway when they were stopped at 10.20pm.

The couple were returning to the hotel to pick up their car, Wright said.

''Apparently the wife needed the car for work the next morning. It's just utter stupidity and quite dangerous,'' Wright said.

The man is facing a charge of driving with an excess breath alcohol and is expected to appear in the Gore District Court on July 23.
